💪 The Challenge

Skytek was tasked by the Irish Emergency Services to help their response time using satellites and by creating software that processes the satellite data and user input. The program is mean to be able to be opened across many screens in an emergency responder room.

We build a minimal tool, not distracting in any way so the staff can focus on the control panel. These were all designed large as the computers are plugged up to big on wall tvs. I had to consider time-saving solutions, making sure the type of emergencies is easily noticed by the naked eye via icons. This included a checklist of tasks someone in charge of an emergency needs to make sure is done. A lot of the User Experience had to allow for strict rules as well as the flexibility to add anything that is suddenly important. This was a great project to work on due to it's importance and the UX challenge.

⭐️  The Process

  • User research and Product Discovery: I spend weeks in talks wiht the Irish Emergency Chief, who explained their needs, what is important in an emergency and what are the outcomes. Everything had to be easy to click, fast to find and super intuative to interact with.
  • Designing: I looked at other emergency services and took user feedback into desining a web service which would track on a map new hotspots of incidents, had different tabs for how to manage the emergency. It took a lot of user feedback to nail down some features which was very rewarding, this taught me a lot on how to really pin down product frustrations and chances for improvement.

🎯 The Outcome

I learned a lot working here only in 6 months I designed a product which then later was taken over by another designer once I left. It was my first time working with such a huge client and I came out of it understanding a lot about client and designer relations.
